Are DJI Phantom Batteries Interchangeable? Which Ones Are?

Do you have a DJI Phantom drone and are curious if you can swap out the batteries with a different drone you own? Maybe you found a different Phantom drone for super cheap and are wondering if you can use the batteries from it on your Phantom model.

Well if you are wondering if the Phantom’s batteries are all interchangeable then this article is for you!

DJI has made it where the same models are compatible with each other so all DJI Phantom 4 batteries will work in other DJI Phantom 4s but the Phantom 3 battery will not work with a Phantom 4.

There are a few reasons for the fact that drone batteries often change between models but the main one is the advances in technology. For example the Phantom 4 battery is 5350MaH while the Phantom 3 is 4480 MaH. Obviously that is almost a 25% increase in battery power which means the battery on the Phantom 4 is also larger so the Phantom 3 battery doesn’t fit.

In the rest of this article we will look a little bit deeper at which Phantom batteries will work in which other models so you can be sure not to be stuck with batteries that won’t work for you. To see the best DJI batteries click here.

Figuring out how to fly a new drone can be difficult for beginners but not with this model.

I purchased this model for my 7-year-old son and he figured it out easily.

With auto hover, auto trim, and super simple controls you can’t go wrong. And it was pretty cheap too!

Are Phantom 4 and Phantom 4 Pro batteries the same?

If you have a Phantom 4 or Phantom 4 Pro and are looking for some spare batteries knowing which batteries are compatible and will work with the other model is vitally important.

The Phantom 4 and Phantom 4 Pro batteries are compatible but they are not the same. The Phantom 4 Pro batteries have approximately 10% in additional capacity but they are the same size and will work in the Phantom 4 just fine.

The extra battery capacity is largely eaten up by the extra features that the Phantom 4 Pro has but if you use the Phantom 4 Pro battery in your Phantom 4 then that extra 10% battery capacity will increase the flight time of the drone.

An extra 10% isn’t that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things but having the batteries be compatible means you can find spare batteries for your Phantom or Phantom 4 Pro for a better price.

Are Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 batteries the same?

If you are upgrading from the Phantom 3 to the Phantom 4 and are wondering whether the batteries will work with each other then we are here to answer that question for you.

The DJI Phantom 3 batteries will not work with the Phantom 4 as the batteries not only have different capacities but they are different sizes. Since they are different sizes Phantom 3 and 4 batteries have different chargers and the batteries from the other drone will not fit either.

DJI Phantom 4 batteries are 3 inches long, 2 inches high, and 1 inch wide while the Phantom 3 batteries are 3.1 inches high, 3.1 inches high, and 1.8 inches wide. Obviously there is a decent size difference between the two batteries so they are not interchangeable and unfortunately can’t be used with each other.

Are Phantom 2 and Phantom 3 batteries the same?

The Phantom 2 was released in 2013 while the Phantom 3 was released in 2015. In just those few short years the technology had changed quite a bit especially when it came to drones so the batteries on the Phantom 2 and the Phantom 3 were quite different.

The Phantom 2 battery was an 11.1V 5200MaH while the Phantom 2 had a 15.2V 4480MaH battery. These batteries are not interchangeable either so you can’t use the Phantom 2 batteries in the Phantom 3 and vice versa.

DJI changed the battery sizes and voltage with almost every single model upgrade so just like the Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 batteries are not compatible so the Phantom 2 and Phantom 3 batteries are not compatible either.

Some people have reported that they put a Phantom 2 battery inside a Phantom 3 and were able to get it running but because of the lower voltage in the Phantom 2 battery it would not take off.

Technology continues to advance especially when it comes to batteries and the capacity that they offer. It is likely that when they release the DJI Phantom 5 the batteries will not be compatible with the Phantom 4 either.

Are DJI controllers interchangeable?

There are many similarities between all of the DJI drone controllers. They all tend to look the same and of course the actual controls on them are pretty similar as well but are the controllers compatible and interchangeable?

None of the DJI controllers are interchangeable and compatible with other controllers except in rare cases from the same model or specs, just different versions.

Some of those rare cases that are compatible are:

  • A Phantom 3 Pro controller is compatible with the Phantom 4 drone.
  • The Phantom 4 Pro+ controller is compatible with the Phantom 4 drone.
  • The Phantom 4 Pro controller is compatible with the Phantom 4 drone.
  • The Phantom 4 Advanced controller is compatible with the Phantom 4 Pro drone.
  • All Phantom 3 controllers are compatible with other Phantom 3 models besides the Phantom 3 standard.

The compatibility  mentioned above is one way as well so for example the Phantom 4 Pro controller will work with the Phantom 4 drone but the Phantom 4 drone controller will NOT work with the Phantom 4 Pro drone.

Will Phantom 4 propellers work on the Phantom 3 and vice versa?

If you have a Phantom 4 and are wondering if the Phantom 3 propellers will work on it or if you have a Phantom 3 and are wanting to use the Phantom 4 propellers on that then this section is for you!

Unfortunately the Phantom 3 and Phantom 4 propellers are not compatible or interchangeable. You can only use Phantom 4 propellers for the Phantom 4 and Phantom 3 propellers for the Phantom 3.

The propellers are compatible between the different models so the Phantom 4 propellers will work fine on the Phantom 4 Pro and vice versa but not from one model to another.

Conclusion

I hope this article has been helpful to you in answering your questions about DJI Phantom drones and their compatibility with older and newer models. Since there are so many different models and even versions of a model it can be extremely difficult to figure out what is interchangeable with what.

DJI Drones are certainly the best of the best and when people think of drones the first company that they think of is DJI. They really do lead the pack when it comes to the best drones with the best features and the Phantom is one of their top of the line models as well.
